Biomimicry inspires explosives detector
What is it?
Using a 3D printer, scientists at the USA’s National Institute of Standards
and Technology have produced an artificial nose, based on a female
golden retriever’s. It has the same olfactory capabilities as the dog’s
nose so can detect smells that are imperceptible to humans, including
explosives, drugs or even some types of cancer.
What difference does it make?
In addition to carrying out assignments previously done by sniffer dogs,
this innovation shows how technology is inspired by biology and could
even surpass it.
