Participatory democracy goes digital

Beginning with Iceland's rejection by referendum in 2008 of national debt incurred by state banks, Iceland's constitution is now in its—and the world's—first inclusively democratic process of overhaul. A special commission, elected by popular vote and conducting most of its work openly on the internet, has drafted a new constitution that presently awaits ratification by Althingi, the supreme legislative body in both the proposed new constitution and the old.
