Gallinazo Avisa
Vultures spot illegal waste
What is it?

To raise the awareness of illegal trash dumps among Lima’s inhabitants,
the Peruvian Environment Ministry and the U.S. Agency for International
Development (USAID) launched "Gallinazo avisa". The programme fits
wild vultures with GoPro cameras and trackers to find pollution spots in
real time. Because vultures are always the first on the scene. This
upstream detection avoids some of the health problems caused by
uncontrolled landfills.

What difference does it make?

A simple, cheap innovation that combines the birds’ instinctive behaviour
with technology to serve the local population. A step towards augmented
animals?
