Random Darknet Shopper Netexplo 100 2016

Take a walk on the dark side

Using a computer program that makes random purchases, Swiss artists from !Mediengruppe Bitnik have decided to explore the unknown land known as the dark net. This exploration, featuring a bot that is sent to make purchases, was a contemporary art initiative aiming to supply items to an exhibition, but the ten or so acquisitions included (in addition to counterfeit trainers, jeans and an actual fake Hungarian passport) a quantity of Ecstasy and contraband cigarettes, which resulted in the Swiss authorities seizing all the items. Although this raises questions about freedom of artistic expression and sheds some light on the sort of people hiding within the Dark Web and its underground economy, it mostly raises the issue of dilution of responsibility when it's a robot taking the initiative.
