Artificial bee pollinates flowers
In response to bee colony collapse, Eijiro Miyako’s team at NIAIST, Japan designed a drone that can pollenate plants.
The drone is 4cm across and weighs 15g. Its underside is covered with adhesive gel-coated horsehair.
The manually controlled drone brushes past a flower, picking up pollen as it flies and depositing it on the next flower.
The next step is to make it autonomous.
In this technological approach to a major ecological issue, the idea is not to save an endangered species but to replace it with machines.
