Treating dementia with virtual reality
Dementia is a problem currently affecting 46M people worldwide. The start-up VRTU has developed an app using virtual reality to apply reminiscence therapy principles and treat dementia symptoms. Reminiscence therapy consists of help patient recall memories to improve their psychological wellbeing and prevent the condition from worsening. With a virtual reality headset, the user experiences personalised time-travel scenarios which unlock memories and stimulate their memory.
VRTU reminds us of the Black Mirror episode San Junipero. Using time-travel systems is quite a common treatment for dementia and some facilities even recreate past scenes in real-life sets. VRTU offers an alternative that is just as immersive but cheaper and more accessible.
